Xu Xiaomu (1916-1998) is a famous seal carver and bamboo carver. He grew up in a family of scholars in Lili Town, Wujiang County, Jiangsu Province. Since childhood, Ying Huichang had learned seal carving, bamboo carving, bowl carving, dark-red enameled pottery carving and so on. His greatest achievement is in bamboo carving. Bamboo carving wins with shallow carving and replaces pen with knife. The knife operation is flexible and changeable with extraordinary strength of character. He is good at incisively and vividly expressing the intensity, power and water content of ink in painting and calligraphy. In his early years, he mainly carved Liu Yazi’s calligraphy works. In the later period, he mainly carved Mao Zedong’s poetry works and calligraphy works which were very sophisticated.
